ME AND MY PARROT
SPRING / SUMMER 16
Frida Kahlo’s painting inspires this collection. She drew many self-portraits with her pets and this one with beautiful parrots always moved me, taking me back to a place of nostalgia.
I grew up with a parrot of my own and I have fond memories of my grandmother’s serene garden, where I’d spend lots of time with her and the bird. She would knit hand-embroidered handkerchiefs, tablecloths and many other useful items while basking in the warm rays of the winter sun. The time in the garden is what I want to capture. The fun, the light-hearted days, no hurry to do anything but enjoy the moment. The garden invited many varieties of birds, which I got to know quite well. This collection uses one of nature’s most beautiful creations for textures, colors and shapes.
The collection is a celebration of that special time and place.
